A masterpiece of food essays that has continued to be reprinted since its first publication in 1963 (Showa 38) to the present day. Set in Paris in the 1950s, when the author was staying there as a chanson singer, the book is written in a light-hearted style and is a record of the food she made, ate, and experienced. The descriptions of the food wafting from the pages give the book an aspect of being a recipe book for Western-style home cooking, and the old-fashioned use of words such as "butter" and "boiled wine" is reminiscent of the nostalgic beauty of French films. The book's cover was designed by Yasuji Hanamori, who was the editor-in-chief of Kurashi no Techo at the time of publication.
