V.A – Modern Jazz Gallery | Kapp Records [used]
Kapp, a popular music label from New York, USA, approached the then-thriving West Coast Jazz scene. This original two-disc compilation objectively conveys the excitement of the scene in 1957 and the charm of its rich and diverse musicality.
It includes 24 tracks by three big bands led by popular musicians such as Marty Paich and Med Flory, and three combo groups. It offers a casual experience of the "happy and glamorous" and "cool and smart" image of West Coast Jazz.
The hidden highlight of this work is the four tracks by the John Towner Quartet.
This young pianist named John Towner, who could play everything from aggressive pieces to delicate ballads, later became John Williams, a master of Hollywood film music, producing soundtracks for "Star Wars" and "Jurassic Park."
Loring Eutemey, who later designed album covers for many jazz masterpieces by artists such as John Coltrane and Charles Mingus, was responsible for the cover illustration.
