This collection pairs their 1991 debut, Distant Plastic Trees—a charmingly lo-fi bedroom synth-pop album performed and programmed entirely by bandleader Stephin Merritt—with 1992’s The Wayward Bus, which expanded their sound with live instrumentation, sentimental melodies, and richer arrangements.
Both albums share two defining hallmarks: the understated vocals of Susan Anway (who departed after The Wayward Bus), and the pastoral yet ironical watercolour artwork by Wendy Smith, best known for her iconic work with Young Marble Giants. Grounded in a DIY spirit, these early recordings stand as a quiet acts of resistance, echoing the sensibility of the UK post-punk scene.
