[WALLFLOWER CATALOGUE] FILE 002. Iwamura Ryuta “Raining to Hear”, “Tuning to Hear”
An artistic picture frame called a jewel case
I don't remember much about the time when CDs first came out. I think my father continued to buy new releases on vinyl until the end of the 80s. I do remember, however, that when I was in junior high school, I would ride my bike to the rental store on the outskirts of town to rent CDs, and the CDs came in clear plastic cases.
Though jewel cases are the standard way to store CDs, reissues of classic vinyl albums can look uncomfortably housed in shiny plastic.
However, with this series by Ryuta Iwamura, it is amazing how such ordinary cases appear to have been specially tailored to fit perfectly.
Noritake's design, which is simple line drawings and typography on white paper, is like an actor who can convey his inner thoughts with only efficient movements and gazes. The lines have a soft fluctuation to them, so they don't feel cold and impersonal.
The transparent case contains a subtle, moving yet firm aesthetic that is just like the melodies that Iwamura plays. It also feels like conceptual art.
When designing, there is no need to be particular about special materials or processing, or to always incorporate new ideas. If the expression, idea, and design overlap perfectly, there is no need for extra craftsmanship. Simple choices are the best work.
This is the kind of minimalist design we all aspire to.
