Saul Leiter (1923-2013) took photographs and painted every day until just before his death at the age of 89, leaving behind a vast body of work. His source of inspiration was just a few blocks from his apartment on East 10th Street in Manhattan, and his colored depictions of the city of New York, a genius for finding beauty in ordinary places, have attracted widespread attention today.
On the other hand, his work as a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar in the 1960s and 1970s, his black and white landscapes, his "intimate portrait" nudes, and his painted nude photographs were rarely published during his lifetime. This book, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Leiter's birth, is a definitive collection of Saul Leiter's works that draws on the vast archives managed by the Saul Leiter Foundation to bring to light the diversity of his expression, the source of his prototypes, and his complete picture, making full use of valuable materials such as unpublished works, contact sheets, and a photographic chronology of his life.
