This 1947 work was written by French author Raymond Queneau, who is also known for his novel "Zazie de la Metro," which was adapted into a film by Louis Malle, and the original lyrics of the chanson "If You Imagine It," sung by Juliette Gréco. Written with the unique concept of describing a single ordinary event in 99 different writing styles, this work is entertaining as a rhythmic play on words, but it also conveys irony about how easily impressions can be manipulated with a single word, as well as a sense of expectation and hope for the power hidden in words themselves. The beautiful binding by Masayoshi Nakajo visually reflects the surreal atmosphere of the work through an unconventional layout and use of fonts, making it an appealing addition to the book.
