This book is a picture book version of a short story that Paul Auster contributed to the New York Times in 1990 and later became the basis for the film "Smoke," translated by Motoyuki Shibata and illustrated by Tadajun. The author is told a cigar shop owner living in Brooklyn, New York, and the visuals he uses to tell this unusual Christmas story are like an elaborate cynical joke, yet somehow also heartwarming.
