This is the first collection in Japan to feature the masterpieces of French contemporary artist Sophie Calle. The exhibition includes Sophie Calle's installation Grand Bouquet (2020), inspired by Odilon Redon's gigantic pastel painting Grand Bouquet (owned by Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum of Art), the series Because, which explores the interplay between text and photography, What Do You See, which asks questions about empty picture frames, Imprisoned Picasso, which photographs a Picasso work covered by paper, and Looking at the Sea, a video work that films people in Istanbul seeing the sea for the first time. The text parts, which play an important role in Sophie Calle's work, have been translated into Japanese, and the book has been specially bound with a folded section, among other ingenious ideas for how the work is presented on paper. This book was published as the official catalog for the exhibition "Absence: Toulouse-Lautrec and Sophie Calle," which will be held at the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum of Art (Tokyo) from November 2024.
