Six decades (1908-1967) saw New York undergo a dramatic transformation into a global metropolis. Based in the city, he painted not famous landmarks, but everyday scenes set in inconspicuous street corners and buildings. Hopper's works, which captured the conflict between the old and the new that arose in urbanizing life, and the confusion of the era where "public and private" intersect, and built up his own urban style, are looked back on through the Whitney Museum's vast archive.
